Kentucky Medical Insurance

Despite Kentucky's relatively poor conditions when compared with the rest of the country, you'll find a wide variety of medical insurance options in the state suited to your own needs. Whether you're an individual seeking private health insurance, or a family looking for more state assistance to cover your children, you'll find a wide range of plans and options.

To start, you should decide which plan and coverage is best for you. If you purchase a PPO (preferred provider organization) plan, you'll find the quality of care and the flexibility to your liking; however, you will have to pay for this higher level type of coverage. If you choose an HMO (health management organization), on the other hand, you'll find longer lines, lower quality care, and coverage that may be more restrictive. However, the HMO plans cost much less than PPO plans.
If you are exceptionally hard up for cash, and can't afford a full PPO or HMO plan, but would still like to cover your children, you may want to look into the Family Choices program, the Kentucky SCHIP (state children's health insurance program) designed to help provide health care to children whose parents are economically strapped.

Kentucky's Quality of Medical Care and Insurance

Overall the quality of Kentucky's medical care is lower than average, but it still excels in certain areas of care. Kentucky ranks especially high in providing prenatal care to expecting mothers. The state also has a lower-than-average HIV/AIDs mortality rate, which allows hospitals to focus on other health conditions with full force. At the same time, the state has exceptionally high levels of cancer, especially lung cancer, largely due to the large smoking population in Kentucky. In order to improve quality of care, Kentucky will likely need to focus on improving their cancer mortality rates and decreasing the amount of smokers in the state. This could possibly be done through higher cigarette taxes.
